The Ultimate Guide to StepN

In this guide, we explore how StepN enables the Move-to-Earn community.

The Ultimate Guide to StepN

What is StepN?

StepN is a Web3 lifestyle app with Social-Fi and Game-Fi elements that requires you to move to earn rewards - the more you move, the more tokens you earn.

You equip yourself with sneaker NFTs and use them for walking, jogging, or running outdoors. By doing so, you will earn game currency (GST), which can either be used in-game to enhance your sneakers or cashed out for profit.

StepN aims to inspire millions toward a healthier lifestyle, combat climate change and connect the public to Web 3.0. It currently runs on Solana and BNB Chain.

How to earn with StepN?

You can earn with StepN by purchasing Sneaker NFTs, walk or jog with them and earn rewards. The process for doing so is explained below:

Step 1: Download the StepN app

Download the app for iOS or Android.

Step 2: Sign up for StepN account

Sign up for a StepN account with an email address.

In order to join the StepN community, you need an activation code which can be found on Discord or from an existing friend. In Discord, activation codes are released every 15 minutes.

Step 3: Create or import a new wallet

Once you've successfully created an account, you need to create or import a Solana wallet. If you already have one, you can reuse your existing wallet. Otherwise, you can create a new wallet within the app.

The wallet will allow you to store your NFTs, tokens and more and exchange between them.

StepN recently released Sneakers on the BNB Chain as well, and you can now in addition to Solana, import a BNB Chain Wallet.

Step 4: Transfer SOL or BNB tokens into your wallet

Fund your newly created or imported wallet with SOL or BNB. You can transfer BNB from Binance or SOL from FTX.

This will be used for purchasing sneakers on the in-app marketplace.

Step 5: Choose a sneaker

There are four Sneaker types, each designed to suit a different exercise intensity and/or fitness level.

The sneaker type you choose will impact your GST earnings rate.

In order to earn GST at an optimal rate, you'd need to:

  • Ensure GPS signal is good - you will earn less if GPS signal is poor
  • Ensure your sneaker is well maintained - you will earn less if your sneaker has low durability
  • Walk or run at the optimal speed for your sneaker type - you will earn less if you move out of the speed range

Step 6: Purchase a sneaker from the marketplace

Head over to the in-app Marketplace and pick out a sneaker of your preference.

You can use the Filter tool to look for a Sneaker type of your preference - for example, you can use filters to find sneakers by level, mint, rarity and more. Ensure you have enough BNB or SOL for the purchase in your wallet.

Sneaker qualities and attributes

There are 5 Sneaker qualities - common, uncommon, rare, epic and legendary. When a Sneaker is minted, the value of each Attribute will be chosen at random within the minimum and maximum values for the quality.

Sneaker quality and attributes

The price of the Sneaker in the marketplace depends on its quality and attributes. If this is your first sneaker, you may want to pick up one on the floor.

Step 7:  Accumulate energy to move

The game runs on Energy and you need Energy to start earning rewards, similar to how most mobile RPGs work. Each energy corresponds to 5 minutes of move and earn time.

You will start the game with 2/2 Energy for one Sneaker - equivalent to 10 minutes of move and earn time - and the energy meter replenishes by 25% every 6 hours until it reaches the Energy Cap.

You can increase your maximum Energy by holding more Sneakers.

For example, if you hold 3 sneakers, you will have 4 Energy every day and you can move and earn for 20 minutes each day.

You can receive more Energy, stackable on top of the above table, by owning higher Quality Sneakers:

  • Uncommon Sneaker: +1 Energy
  • Rare Sneaker: +2 Energy
  • Epic Sneaker: +3 Energy
  • Legendary Sneaker: +4 Energy

Step 8: Move!

Once you've accumulated enough energy to start moving, you can finally earn rewards for moving by taking part in Solo mode.

In Solo Mode, you would equip your NFT Sneakers. While moving, you will spend Energy to earn Green Satoshi Tokens (GST).

To begin, select a Sneaker of their choice, and press Start, then start walking or running at your Sneaker's optimal speed.

Rewards will be paid out for every minute of movement, which is dependent on 4 main factors:

  • Sneaker type - Trainers earn the most while Walkers earn the least GST per minute
  • Efficiency - the higher the Sneaker's efficiency, the more GST earned per minute
  • Comfort - the higher the Sneaker's comfort, the more GMT earned per minute
  • Speed of movement - to maximise earnings, keep within the optimal speed range of your Sneaker

The Solo Mode Earning Mechanics is as follows:

Once you have fully depleted your Energy for the day, you will stop earning rewards. You can only earn GST up to a specified limit called the daily token cap which starts at 2 and reaches its limit at 300.

Step 9: Collect earnings and repair your Sneakers

Finish running and you'll find your GST rewards in your inventory.

You would have also seen that your Sneaker's durability drops after using it. Durability is a trait that may impact earnings at certain levels. A “worn-out” penalty occurs during the following 2 scenarios:

  1. At 50/100 Durability, Sneaker Efficiency drops to 90%
  2. At 20/100 Durability, Sneaker Efficiency drops to 10%

The rate of durability decay is affected by your Sneaker's Resilience attribute. A higher Resilience will result in a slower durability decay.

It's advised to repair your sneaker after every run by spending GST tokens.

Step 10: Reinvest earnings or sell

The final step is to reinvest your earnings or sell for USDC to recoup your initial investment in the Sneaker.

You may reinvest your GST earnings for:

  • Levelling up your Sneakers to assign more attribute points and earn more GST rewards
  • Repair your Sneakers
  • Mint new Sneakers
  • Upgrade Gems
  • Unlock Sneaker Sockets

That's the typical lifecycle of how one would get started and earn GST tokens from StepN. However, the game goes beyond that, and long-term users may also want to understand other game mechanics to either boost their earnings power or capitalize on the game's long-term growth.

Mystery Box rewards

While moving in Solo mode, you may randomly be dropped additional rewards called a Mystery Box. It may contain loot such as GST tokens, Gems (Level 1 – 3) which may be used to enhance your Sneaker's stats, or nothing at all.

There are 4 types of Gems classified by color including:

  • Yellow: Increases Efficiency
  • Blue: Increases Luck
  • Red: Increases Comfort
  • Purple: Increases Resilience

Like sneakers, Mystery Boxes also have five quality types and when you receive a Mystery Box, you must wait before opening it, and the countdown begins automatically.

The factors which affect mystery box quality are:

  • Your Sneaker's Luck value
  • The amount of Energy used in one single session by moving

Sneaker minting

Purchasing Sneakers from the marketplace is not the only way to acquire new Sneakers.

You could breed two Sneakers called parents or vintages and create a new one, while increasing the Mint of two existing Sneakers. This process is called a Shoe-Minting Event (SME), and it produces a Shoebox in the process which can be opened immediately.

Each mint will cost a fixed amount of GST and GMT, depending on the Quality of the sneakers you're using to mint and the number of times you've minted these sneakers.

Minting will result in a 48-hour cooldown period on the sneakers you used to mint and you can't mint using them.

The output of the Shoebox will produce a Sneaker with its Quality determined by the Shoebox Quality:

Shoebox quality based on Vintage quality

You can perform a maximum of 7 SMEs per Sneaker and the higher the SME count a Sneaker has, the more GST/GMT it will cost.
